Prepare Your Plumbing System Before a Hurricane
When a hurricane is headed your way, there’s plenty to think about. Batteries, bottled water, flashlights, groceries, outdoor furniture… the list can get long fast. Your plumbing may not be at the top of that list, but it deserves a spot.

Start With Your Water Supply
If a forecasted storm is approaching, fill clean containers with water for drinking and basic household needs. You may also want to fill your clean bathtub with water. This can give you an emergency supply for flushing toilets if your water service is interrupted.
If your home has a water filtration or treatment system, check that everything is secure and functioning properly before the storm. Make sure equipment is protected from potential flooding, too. Electrical components and standing water are a bad combination.
It’s also worth knowing where your home’s main water shutoff valve is located. If a pipe breaks or a fixture starts leaking during the storm, shutting off the water quickly can prevent a small plumbing issue from becoming a much bigger mess.
Clear Those Drains
Heavy rain can put a serious strain on your home’s drainage system. Before the storm arrives, take a few minutes to check your drains and make sure they’re flowing freely.
Clear leaves, dirt, and other debris from outdoor drains around your property. Inside, check sinks, showers, and tubs for slow drainage. If water is already taking its sweet time disappearing, a hurricane is not the moment to discover that you have a clog.
Protect Your Pipes
Strong storms can bring flooding, debris, and power outages, all of which can affect your plumbing system. Take a look around exposed plumbing and make sure pipes are properly supported. If you have plumbing fixtures or equipment in areas that could flood, consider what can be moved or protected before the storm arrives.
If your home has a well system, septic system, sump pump, or other specialty equipment, check that it is in good working order before the storm. These systems can be especially important when heavy rain or flooding affects your property.
Know What to Do During a Power Outage
A hurricane can knock out power for hours or even days. If your home relies on a well pump, water treatment system, sump pump, or other electrically powered plumbing equipment, that outage can affect more than your lights.
If you have a generator, know which equipment it can safely support and follow the manufacturer’s instructions. Never use a generator indoors or in an enclosed space.
It’s also a good idea to avoid putting unnecessary strain on your plumbing while conditions are unstable. If local officials issue boil-water notices or other water-related guidance, follow those instructions carefully.
After the Storm, Take a Look Around
Once the storm passes and it’s safe to head outside, give your plumbing a quick check. Look for obvious leaks, damaged pipes, standing water, unusual smells, or changes in water pressure.
If your water looks cloudy or has an unusual color or odor, don’t assume it will clear up on its own. Check for local advisories and contact our plumbing team if you’re concerned.
