Why Is My Water Pressure Low?
There’s nothing quite like turning on the shower and getting hit with what feels like a sad little trickle. Low water pressure can make everyday tasks frustrating, but it can also point to a plumbing issue that deserves a closer look.
The good news? You don’t have to play detective for long. Let’s dive into a few common reasons your water pressure may have dropped.
Check the Easy Stuff First
Before you assume there’s a major plumbing problem, check whether the issue is happening throughout your home or just one fixture.
If it’s only the kitchen sink or shower, the aerator or showerhead could be clogged with mineral buildup. Give it a good cleaning and see if the pressure improves.
If the pressure is low everywhere, there’s likely something else going on.
Your Pipes Could Be the Problem
Older plumbing systems can develop corrosion, mineral buildup, or other restrictions inside the pipes. Over time, that buildup can narrow the space available for water to flow.
Leaks can also cause a noticeable pressure drop. If you’ve noticed damp spots, unusually high water usage, or the sound of running water when everything is turned off, it’s worth having your plumbing checked by our team.
Don’t Forget the Pressure Regulator
Your home may have a pressure-reducing valve, also called a pressure regulator, that controls how much water enters your plumbing system.
When the regulator starts to fail, you may notice inconsistent or unusually low pressure throughout the house. Adjusting or replacing it may be all it takes to get things flowing normally again. (We’re happy to take a look.)
It Could Be the Water Supply
Sometimes, the problem isn’t inside your home at all. Municipal water issues, work being done in your area, or a problem with the main water line can affect pressure.
If your neighbors are experiencing the same thing, that’s a pretty good clue that the issue may be outside your plumbing system.
